Variety, the Spice of Life
Sammy Johnson was a former everything. You name it—semi-pro football player, golden glove boxer, ultimate fighter, second-tier celebrity bodyguard and military man—at one time or another he had done it. Tattooed on sixty percent of his chiseled body, including one of Winnie the Pooh at the base of his penis, he’d been in and out of prison since he was eighteen—assault charges mostly—but had managed to stay clean for the past year and a half, largely due to the far reaching influences of his current employer, Louis Vinson. Today, he came to Vinson’s magnificent penthouse suite for their weekly face-to-face, a grueling hour of question and answer that typically saw Vinson asking all the questions while Johnson scrambled for the right answers.
The past week had not been a particularly memorable one for Sammy. He had botched a burglary and received a whipping from a homeless guy, neither of which he told Vinson about yet. It had been his only assignment and he fucked it up royally. As he sat before Vinson’s desk in a plain, uncomfortable wooden chair that seemed out of place in the plush surroundings, he braced himself for the upcoming rake-over-the-coals.
Still pissed off about misplacing his BlackBerry, Vinson was not in a good mood and though he didn’t know it yet, Sammy’s weekly report was only going to make it worse.
“Have you got those files for me?” Vinson asked. He rarely tiptoed around the issue at hand, except when he wanted to make someone squirm. Sammy wasn’t a squirmer though; just a very strong man with a really short fuse, one Vinson knew enough not to light. He got up into Sammy’s grill only once, a few days after his hire, and that had proven to be a mistake. Carefully selected words faired better against Sammy Johnson. In those battles, he had few means for defending himself.
“Oh, shit,” Sammy said in exaggerated disgust. “I left them back at my place. I apologize, Mr. Vinson. I’ll bring them by first thing in the morning, if that’s all right with you.”
Sammy’s boss glared at him. Vinson knew bullshit when he smelt it and Sammy was reeking.
Holding firm, the former Marine washout glared back, his muscles coiling instinctively, preparing to counter if Vinson came charging over the desk. It was a reflex that had gotten him into trouble many times, but Sammy couldn’t help it, his temper never strayed far from the surface, lingering like a hungry swamp gator.
“Tomorrow, first thing,” Vinson said. He knew Sammy was lying but he had more pressing issues to discuss. The first being Elizabeth Hart, the acquisitions analyst he just sent to the unemployment line for not sharing her considerable charms with an important client. She was a pristine bitch who refused to uncross her legs and now she would have to pay the piper for her prudishness. Had her pedigree been less impressive—and less documented—Vinson would have opted to erase her like so many others, relishing the sight of her wandering the streets like a worthless crack whore.
